Wear-Reduction Technology in Total Knee Arthroplasty
نویسنده
چکیده
Due to the increasing burden of revision in total knee arthroplasty (TKA), sustainable improvements in implant longevity may require the continued development of advanced bearing materials. The LEGIONTM Primary Knee System featuring VERILASTTM technology is the first device to combine an OXINIUMTM Oxidized Zirconium femoral component with a highly crosslinked ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) tibial insert to form an advanced TKA bearing. Following the review of published volumetric wear rates, this bearing coupling was found to provide the lowest observed wear of any contemporary TKA device, potentially supporting the equivalent of 30 years of normal use in vivo. This evidence supports the assertion that both tibial and femoral bearing surfaces can significantly affect TKA wear. Moreover, the use of VERILASTTM technology may reduce long-term revision risk and support device longevity in younger, more active patients.

Reduction of Wear in Fixed Bearing Total Knee Replacement Using Crosslinked Uhmwpe
Introduction Reduction of ultra high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) surface wear in total knee replacement (TKR) bearings may delay the onset of osteolysis and subsequent loosening of components. Crosslinking has been shown to increase the wear resistance of UHMWPE bearings in multidirectional total hip replacement applications when articulating against smooth counterfaces [1]. The aim ...
متن کاملCurrent Concepts Review Wear in Total Hip and Knee Replacements
Before the advent of total joint replacement, patients who had end-stage arthritis of the lower extremities had unremitting pain and a greatly decreased functional capacity. In addition, they often were confined to a wheelchair and were dependent on the care of others. Today, the outcomes of primary total hip and knee replacement are predictable and usually excellent. Prosthetic joint replaceme...
متن کاملVERILASTTM Technology An advanced bearing system for TKA
Introduction Long-term success of total knee arthroplasty (TKA) is a multifactorial issue. Implant design and materials selection play an important role in the wear-related performance of TKA. It is widely recognized that excessive wear of UHMWPE tibial inserts can result in mechanical implant instability and, in some instances, catastrophic wear. However, the more harmful effect occurs with ti...
متن کاملWear debris pseudotumor following total knee arthroplasty: a case report
INTRODUCTION In patients who have undergone a total joint replacement, any mass occurring in or adjacent to the joint needs thorough investigation and a wear debris-induced cyst should be suspected. CASE PRESENTATION An 81-year-old man presented with a painful and enlarging mass at the popliteal fossa and calf of his right knee. He had had a total right knee replacement seven years previously...
متن کاملWear of moderately cross-linked polyethylene fixed bearing knee replacements
Cross-linked polyethylene has been explored as an alternative to conventional polyethylene in total joint replacement in order to reduce wear volume and decrease failure through polyethylene wear debris induced osteolysis [1]. Due to the demands of a total knee replacement, moderately cross-linked polyethylene is recommended to retain mechanical properties [2]. This study aims to investigate th...
